Say “Aloha” to Richmond’s New Port-to-Plate Restaurant, Island Shrimp Co.

Bright blue shipping containers stacked, repurposed and reimagined are the first signal that Island Shrimp Co., the latest concept from the Richmond-based HOUSEpitality Group of restaurants, is anything but ordinary.

Island Shrimp Co. offers an ambiance that marries cozy and intimate with an industrial, yet comfortable, feel. HOUSEpitality Family sees container ships as the great connectors of the world’s goods and cuisines, a reminder for guests on how the world is linked. They are the first restaurant group to bring a container building to the greater Richmond area.

Inspired by the vibrant colors, Caribbean music and neon lights of the tropics, Island Shrimp Co.’s décor invites you to escape from the everyday. The menu is also an escape to the islands, with dishes such as the aloha pineapple boat, four different flavors of shrimp and chicken curry bowls, all served alongside island drink favorites.

The port-to-plate restaurant is the third brand for the HOUSEpitality group and the seventh eatery in the company’s portfolio. Located at Chesterfield Towne Center in Richmond, Virginia, the restaurant features an open-air rooftop patio and bar that connects via a “party bridge” to Casa del Barco, Island Shrimp Co.’s Mexican-themed sister restaurant.

The Healy family are the masterminds behind the success of HOUSEpitaliy, aptly named based on the company’s focus on family and the sense of “home” they strive to create in each of their restaurants.

“At Island Shrimp Co., we want our guests to have a carefree and relaxed time,” said Paige Healy, Chief Creative Officer for HOUSEpitality. “We wanted to give guests a place where they could preserve their memories, experience great vibes, and enjoy a vibrant port city experience with elevated dishes rooted in tropical culinary culture. The decor and atmosphere are very reflective of that.

“Upon entering the restaurant, you see our motto, ‘No Bad Days.’ We believe in the power of gratitude. Each day, we want to help our guests and crew be grateful for the day, and our No Bad Days motto is just one of the many ways we hope to remind people to be thankful.”

The Healy family creates an esprit de corps in which every team member, from the back of the house to the front of the house, wants to celebrate with the guests. Being a team member at one of the HOUSEpitality family restaurants really means being treated like family, with the average length of service for their leadership staff being more than 17 years.

When it comes to their banking relationship, the Healys wanted bankers that would build a great relationship with them, just as they do with their teams.

“South State Bank has been a great partner by helping to provide the financing for the continued growth of our business,” said Kevin Healy, owner of HOUSEpitality Family Restaurant Group. “Not only have they helped provide funding, but unlike the other banks we’ve dealt with in the past, South State has taken the time to learn about our people and our business. Some banks talk about forging great relationships with the local business community. In our experience, South State actually does, and it’s refreshing.”
