The Columbia restaurant scene has seen many changes since 1989, and one of the constant high points has been Motor Supply Co. Bistro. The restaurant’s dedication to local products and an ever-changing menu make it a farm-to-table fan favorite. This year is a big year for Motor Supply as the restaurant is celebrating 30 years and was recently named a top 5 restaurant by Southern Living.
For owner Eddie Wales, Motor Supply’s journey to a top restaurant in the south is all about relationships. It starts with building relationships with local farmers and distributors to ensure the best products from around the region. The network of farms Wales depends on started just down the road, at Freshly Grown Farms in Columbia, S.C. What started as getting hydroponic lettuce for salads, has become the foundation for Motor Supply’s farm-to-table menu. Now, the network of farms Wales and Executive Chef Wesley Fulmer depend on spreads across the region and plays an integral role in inspiring a daily menu.
Farm-to-table doesn’t stop at creating the menu. Head Barman Josh Streetman practices “shaker-to-table” when inventing new cocktails, and his creations have earned their own notoriety in the region. Everything at Motor Supply has been made from scratch, from the desserts to the cocktail mixers, and the restaurant’s popularity speaks to the success.
This year, Motor Supply will celebrate 30 years in business and what better way to celebrate than to be named a top 5 restaurant by Southern Living magazine? While the restaurant has received mentions throughout the year, being selected as one of the best by Southern Living is just the icing on the cake, “We’ve been mentioned in several publications, and for us, it’s about consistently delivering delicious food and good service, then the recognition follows.”
Motor Supply’s journey to become one of the top restaurants in Columbia and the south has been 30 years in the making. As a business built on relationships, Motor Supply has selected a bank that focuses on relationships beyond banking. As Eddie Wales describes, “We go to the bank every day. South State is big enough to offer the services we need and small enough to care about us on a personal level.”
