South State Richmond Regional President Bobby Cowgill had the opportunity to take in a recent performance by the School of Richmond Ballet’s Minds In Motion Ambassadors. The Minds In Motion community engagement program creates a bridge for elementary school students to gain a greater understanding of themselves through dance, classroom curriculum, community partnerships and professional performances.

RICHMOND, Va. – (Dec. 13, 2018) – South State Bank has donated $25,000 to the Richmond Ballet, establishing a scholarship program that will provide lasting support to students who are part of the ballet’s Minds in Motion community engagement program.

“I have had the opportunity to see the impact the Richmond Ballet’s Minds In Motion program is making on children in the Richmond area, and we are pleased to provide an opportunity to enrich the life of these talented students as they enhance their skills and abilities through continued training at the School of Richmond Ballet,” said Bobby Cowgill, Richmond regional president.

“We are extremely grateful to South State Bank for their generous support of our Minds In Motion Ambassador scholarship program,” said Katherine Smothers, Associate School of Richmond Ballet director – Community Engagement. “Providing these students from all neighborhoods who have found a love for dance with the opportunity to continue their dance education in our School is the culmination of a long-held dream of ours, and we couldn’t be happier to see them taking classes in our Canal Street home.”

Richmond Ballet’s acclaimed Minds In Motion (MIM) community engagement program creates a bridge for elementary school students to gain a greater understanding of themselves through dance, classroom curriculum, community partnerships, and professional performances. Comprised of year-long programs, two-week residencies, and summer camps, MIM reaches over 2,000 students locally in Richmond, Chesterfield, and Independent Schools; statewide in Charlottesville and Portsmouth; and internationally in Israel each year.

Professional teaching artists and musicians bring their love and experience of dance to each MIM student while embodying one the Ballet’s core beliefs that dance has a special and unique power to uplift our lives and to reinforce community bonds. The young dancers jump, twist, shake, and stomp as they come together from all walks of life to share a transformative, meaningful arts experience that is the only program of its kind in the Commonwealth. Through the audition-based Ambassador program, former MIM students receive scholarships to continue their dance training at School of Richmond Ballet and perform as representatives of the MIM program at community events.
