ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Dec. 13, 2021 – SouthState Bank today announced a donation of $2,000 to the First Baptist Church of Orangeburg Soup Kitchen in memory of a late board member.
W.B. Cox, Sr., former vice chairman of the SouthState Bank board of directors, was instrumental in starting the soup kitchen and later remodeling space at the church as the meal ministry grew. Gene McConnell, Lowcountry Region president for SouthState, is honored to make a donation in Cox’s memory to help sustain this valuable ministry.
“Knowing that our bank can trace its roots to Orangeburg makes this all the more significant,” McConnell says. “The soup kitchen meant so much to Mr. Cox, and supporting organizations like it directly benefiting our communities is one of our top priorities. We are proud to follow in his footsteps with this contribution.”
Striving to provide a hearty meal for those who need it, the soup kitchen serves once a week. The team of volunteers dishes up approximately 180 meals each month.
“We are so grateful to SouthState for this donation in memory of Mr. Cox and his legacy here at the soup kitchen. We look forward to continuing to serve nutritious meals to our neighbors in need,” adds Jon Hare, soup kitchen director.
