SouthState’s Small Business Banking team supports businesses providing goods and services across eight states. Bankers lend their expertise and guidance to CEOs, accountants, payroll supervisors and new business owners who wear many hats.
“We are ‘entrepreneurs serving entrepreneurs,’” says Matt Vegter, SouthState Director of Small Business Banking. “Our service goes beyond because our bankers lead with empathy, expertise, and a deep understanding and care of the communities they serve.”
Business owners paid it forward this year, naming SouthState the best for small business banking in the nation.
Based on more than 13,000 interviews with businesses across the United States, SouthState received a total of 15 Small Business Banking awards from Crisil Coalition Greenwich’s Best Bank awards. Categories include Ease of Doing Business, Values Long-Term Relationships, Satisfaction in Cash Management and Ease of Making Payments.
“Being recognized by business owners we serve is immensely gratifying,” Vegter says. “Our bankers are dedicated to their clients’ success, and we’re proud to be named ‘best,’ especially in the areas of trust and relationships.”
The Person Behind the Account Number
Bankers provide advice to new startups, succession planning for the next generation, financing options for companies looking to grow and much more. They share their expertise whether the business owner is an online-only designer or a traditional business with multiple storefronts.“Bankers understand the ins and outs of their clients’ needs to provide tailored solutions,” Vegter explains. “They build a personal connection and are invested in their success.”
Vegter recalls one of many instances where a customer’s loan approval made an impact on him. In this case, a newly financed truck on the highway was evidence of a business’ growth lived out in his community.
“Rather than seeing that as just another loan, I saw it as our company having a small part in helping a business hire a new employee who was then able to support their family and community,” he says.
The Why Behind the Work
Everyone has a go-to locally owned coffeeshop, gift shop, mechanic or chiropractor. Small businesses like these truly allow communities to function. It’s essential they have a banker who supports them in all seasons.“These entrepreneurs create local jobs, drive innovation, and foster neighborhood vitality,” Vegter says. “By helping them thrive, we’re investing in the long-term health and resilience of our local economies.”
Spanning eight states, SouthState serves diverse markets with small business owners from all backgrounds. Bankers strive to ensure each one is given exceptional care.
“Small businesses are not just customers—they're our neighbors, partners, and community leaders,” Vegter says. “It’s the relationships we build that set our bankers apart.”
