Bankers Beautify Beaches: SouthState Cleans Up Fort Lauderdale
5/21/2024
A day at the beach is typically a relaxing holiday, but there’s much work that goes into keeping the scenery pristine and ready for visitors. A group of SouthState’s Florida team members rolled up their sleeves at Birch State Park this Spring, doing their part to beautify the area.
Regional President Matt Korshoff, a Fort Lauderdale resident since his teens, believes the cleanup days not only enhance the park’s natural beauty but also build camaraderie between the volunteers.

“I’ve watched this area blossom as I grew in my personal life. It’s so important to me to be a part of cleanup efforts in my community,” Korshoff says.
Over the years, South Florida has experienced growth and development as new residents seek out the mild temperatures and growing business scene. Birch State Park, however, remains untouched and accessible to all as a state park. The land was donated decades ago with the stipulation that it remain a nature preserve.
The park, sometimes called South Florida’s “Central Park,” offers visitors a 180-acre oasis from the hustle and bustle. Michelle Schmitz, Friends of Birch State Park executive director, describes the park as “the green space amongst the high-rise buildings of Fort Lauderdale, a place you can walk your dog, ride your bike and enjoy all the nature trails.”

Unfortunately, not all visitors remember to dispose of their trash.
SouthState partnered with Friends of Birch State Park, whose mission is to maintain the park’s natural beauty and preserve it for future generations. During the volunteer day, team members collected nearly 10 large buckets of trash and debris littering the beach.
Friends of Birch State Park offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups, including working at the ranger station, painting pavilions and driving tour group trams.
